Last year, The Arc of San Antonio approached us with an exciting challenge: to create videos for their annual gala but with a twist. Instead of the usual testimonial videos, they wanted something that could deeply resonate with the audience and truly showcase the impact The Arc has on the lives of its participants and their families.
The Arc of San Antonio is one of the largest and most comprehensive nonprofits in Texas dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. IDD encompasses a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other conditions that affect cognitive and adaptive functioning. These disabilities can impact a person’s ability to learn, communicate, and perform everyday tasks. The Arc’s mission is to empower individuals with IDD to live rich, entire lives by providing critical services and support from early intervention to adulthood.
The Arc offers various programs, including day habilitation, vocational training, case management, and family support services. By fostering independence and community inclusion, The Arc ensures that individuals with IDD can lead meaningful lives and that their families receive the resources and support they need.
Jame’s Journey
In the first video, we follow James through his day at The Arc. From engaging in educational sessions to enjoying recreational activities, the video highlights how The Arc’s programs have been instrumental in helping him develop crucial life skills and social connections. It was an honor to document James’ growth and joy, providing a window into his world and the support he receives.
Jocelyn’s Journey
The second video shifts the focus to Jocelyn, who shares her experiences as both a mother and caregiver. We captured her balancing work, personal life, and caregiving responsibilities, all made possible by the support The Arc provides. Jocelyn’s story is a powerful testament to how The Arc enables families to maintain a sense of normalcy while caring for their loved ones with IDD.
A Personal and Professional Impact
This project was particularly impactful for us as storytellers. Spending time with James and Jocelyn and seeing the real, positive change The Arc brings to their lives was a moving experience. We are especially grateful to James and Jocelyn, who graciously allowed us to be there with them as early as 6 AM to fully capture their day. It’s stories like these that remind us of the power of storytelling and its ability to connect, inspire, and drive change.
We were thrilled to hear from The Arc about the positive feedback the videos received. The two-video approach effectively communicated The Arc’s impact, resonating well with the audience. Dona shared that the videos not only drew the audience’s attention at the gala but also led to a 10% increase in donations compared to previous years. The videos’ success has prompted The Arc to use them in future presentations and fundraising efforts throughout the year.
As we enter September, The Arc has an exciting opportunity for donors: a Double the Match campaign. Starting September 1st, every donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000. This is a chance to contribute even further by supporting The Arc’s incredible work. If James and Jocelyn’s story inspires you and want to help make a difference, please consider donating.
